In what can only be seen as a devastating defeat of progressives in upstate New York Congressman Murphy has voted against the Presidents center piece legislation heath care reform. This coming on the back of the Cities overwhelming rejection of the DFC’s hand picked ideologically pure candidates for city Government is taking its toll on the believer’s morale.
This can be seen by Joe Seeman local MoveOn.org's volunteer regional coordinator bitter comments:
I'm incredibly disappointed with Murphy. If we couldn't count on him to support this, what the hell can we count on him for?
As a life long Democrat I’m afraid I’m seeing the split that started in Saratoga Springs spread out across the 20th district and that progressives stung by what they see as Murphy’s betrayal will at best stay home next year and at worst, pull the lever for the Republican. One can only imagine that Saratoga County Republican Committee Chairman Jasper Nolan will have a lot to be thankful for at this Thanksgiving.
Personally I am also disappointed by the Congressman’s votes but am sympathetic to the difficult spot he was in. I am grateful it did pass and believe Murphy was well aware that it would also pass without his vote.

We are disappointed with Congressman Murphy's vote on the health care bill. We know that the bill was imperfect, but a good start.
Murphy and you can kiss my ass.Anyone but Murphy 2010
Someone say Ron Kim for the 20th district?
I think Nancy Pelosi counts the votes and lets certain Democrats vote against legislation that is seen as unpopular in their districts. I don't think this represents Murphy's honest disagreement with Pelosi or Obama. That would be naive. They are trying to keep the seats they have and if they think a congressperson is in a "blue dog" district they will let him/her vote "no" occassionally so as to seem independent.
Murphy did the right thing. The bill is expensive and won't make the impact everyone wants. It surprised me, I thought Murphy had drank the kool aid Pelosi and Reid dispense...maybe there is some hope?!?
I agree with 6:28pm. Murphy is holding a Media
Conference tomorrow (Monday, Nov. 9) at the office on broadway at 1:00.Ask him why- I am sure he has a good reason, basically to represent the people of the 20th district.
I was highly surprised that Murphy voted no. I for one am glad he did. The bill would not do everything we are hoping and would only increase costs in the end just like what is happening in Mass.
By the way, I emailed Murphy and told him if he voted yes I wouldn't be voting for him in 2010.
I am not the only person to do this so I think he voted with the way the majority wanted him to .
@6:28
I agree. Murphy voted NO to look good for the district. Knowing full well the bill already had the votes needed.
Of course he will never say that, but that is how DC works.
All in an effort to retain the seat when the next it is up for election.
This bill is a long way from becoming law. The Senate has its own bill and the two still need to be reconciled. And both sides of the abortion issue still have to wage their wars.
at least we knew where we stood with Tedisco. Murphy lied to the voters and they feel betrayed
I have discontinued my email subscription to Moveon just because of the rude comments made about Murphy. Murphy was voted in because of his ability to know what we want in the 20th and the fact that we know he will vote for what we want and not what the party wants. I have lived in countries with Health Care bills that do nothing but take money from those that work and pay taxes. Murphy understands that Taxes are paid for by us and we are going to see a HUGE increase in government spending just because of this bill. England falls 13 billion farther in debt because of thier Health care, and Germany used to take 48% of my pay to support their Health bill. I am proud of Murphy for doing what is right, not what the Democratic Party wanted!!!
Well Rep. Murphy, if that's the real reason, I support it, because the bill is awful and does not go far enough.
However, somehow I do not see you as being the populist that Rep Kucinich is. I am afraid I do not believe your reason. I think you voted against it because you are a coward. You were lucky you could have it both ways this time.
You know what I hate about the Saratogian. Not a word on their website that Murphy is having a press conference but then when its over bikerboy does a cheap write up.Hey Bernstein how about a heads up next time
Well Anonymous 3:28 if you had read this blog you would have know. You want up to date info read a blog, you need a liner for a bird cage buy a paper
Well done Mr. Murphy! I guess you aren't a Pelosi drone after all.
