THE END IS NEAR

Unless some as yet unknown earth shattering event takes place between now and Midnight up to forty city workers will be on official notice that they will become redundant next year. Commissioner of Finance Ivins first budget proposed in early October goes into effect at the stroke of midnight thereby eliminating about 40 city jobs. Those cut lose will be eligible for unemployment. New York State now provides 67 additional weeks of unemployment benefits, as well as the usual 26 weeks of regular benefit and you may receive up to $405 a week which is more than many working people make. It also goes without saying they keep their city provided education {free paramedic training for fireman for example} and they will cash in their sick and vacation time. The real saving will come in the long run particularly if these positions are not filled and the personal cuts are permanent, its time the Fireman went back to fighting fires and stop playing roadside MD and the police got back to the basics of community policing and give the ballistic shields and tasers a rest. As far as DPW they need better management and a stop to rampant cronyism and nepotism or our streets and infrastructure will look like shit for the foreseeable future,

The Ghost of Past Commissioners, says:

Let's not look at the layoffs as bad news. No, let us welcome these changes with open arms.

A more spartan work ethic, if you will.

Take the DPW for instance:

Does the guy raking leaves in Congress Park need a pickup truck, with the motor running, by his side all day?
Do we really need that big scooper every time the guys go out to pick up leaves? Why can't somebody enforce the rule that says "all your yard waste MUST be containerized"?
The DPW also posted signs at the entrance to certain developments "no leaf piles in the streets" or something to that effect. Did that happen?
Who the hell is out there enforcing these rules? Nobody...not Fishetti, or any of the other "foremen".
Hey, it starts at the top and trickles down. But first, it has to start at the top.

Power went out at the Crest this weekend and the shit was 1/2 hour from flowing up and over. Guess next time this happens and there is no weekend crew or anyone at the dispatch office people can bag their shit and dropit off at city hall.

It wouldn't hurt Scirroco to get off his ass and grab a rake. Did his son survive the layoffs?
