Home of the Wretched
Times Union/December 3, 2004By Dennis YuskoAlbany -- The U.S. Supreme Court denied without elaboration an appeal to review a case involving a Colonie human potential training company, free speech and the Internet. The top court refused this week to hear from Nxivm, which hired the Washington law firm Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood to have allegations that the company is a cult struck from the Web site of cult researcher Rick Ross. The decision moves the case and a $10 million suit filed by Nxivm back to U.S. District Court in Albany, which, along with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan, already has rejected the injunction requests.Nxivm sued Ross, two mental health experts and a former Nxivm student last year on the grounds that the student gave a Nxivm manual to Ross after signing a confidentiality agreement. Two doctors then characterized Nxivm as a cult. The Supreme Court's decision did not surprise Ross, who has criticized Nxivm's founders, Halfmoon residents Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman, on his site with each court decision. "This is Mr. Raniere's third and final strike. Now it's official: He struck out," Ross said Thursday.Salzman released a statement: "We're obviously disappointed with the court's decision, which we believe is a blow to the sanctity of copyright protection. We believe there are fundamental property rights issues at stake, and we intend to continue to pursue vigorously all possible causes of action against the defendants."Nxivm (pronounced NEX-ee-um) claims in its lawsuit that dissemination of confidential material caused the company to lose prominent members, thousands of dollars a day and more. But Ross' Albany attorney Thomas F. Gleason has portrayed the postings on Ross' Web site as Internet free speech. He has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, which is pending before U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe in Albany. The court will discuss the case before setting a return date, Nxivm's attorney Justin Heller said.Nxivm -- originally Executive Success Programs -- trains people in Raniere's "Rational Inquiry" theory on New Karner Road. Plans to build a headquarters off Woodin Road in Halfmoon have collapsed since last year, when town leaders asked for more details and residents opposed it, Planning Board Chairman Stephen Watts said.Raniere's Knox Woods neighbors have complained about cars parked around the town houses owned by Nxivm Properties LLC, Watts said, adding the town had investigated and found no unauthorized parking or uses.
02.01.10The fantasic financial failures of Keith RanierePosted in Executive Success Programs (ESP), Miscellaneous at 10:21 pm by Rick Rosspd-raniere-2-1_tn.jpgThe Albany Times-Union front-page story this Sunday featured the fantastic financial failures of Keith Raniere (photo left), leader of a purported “cult” near Albany, New York known as NXIVM (pronounced Nexium like the purple antacid pill). It seems some of Raniere’s devotees became the bank for his business schemes, which culminated in fantastic losses.Perhaps those investors may prefer the antacid pill now to further financial advice from NXIVM, also known as “Executive Success Programs.”Raniere, a former multi-level marketing guru that saw his previous business Consumer Buyline go bust, has reportedly blown through about $100 million dollars of other people’s money. That is, funds primarily provided by two heirs to the Bronfman/Seagram fortune, Sara and Clare Bronfman.According to the Times-Union report Raniere lost “$65 million” through commodities speculation, “26 million” in failed California real estate deals and spent millions more in legal fees. But Mr. Raniere, known as “Vanguard” to his faithful followers, apparently attempts to deflect any meaningful personal responsibility by blaming his failures on former business associates, the “negative thoughts” of others and “outside forces.”NXIVM latest lawyer Robert D. Crockett of the Los Angeles law firm of Latham & Watkins, acknowledged Raniere’s “heavy losses,” but seemed to somehow try spinning away their significance.“We’re talking about people [Sara and Clare Bronfman] who have hundreds of millions of dollars to invest in speculative and non-speculative ventures, ” Crockett said. But isn’t it also reasonable to surmise that Raniere, who claims that “The Guinness Book of World Records” has listed him for his supposedly high IQ, is just plain stupid?CultNews has been told that the Bronfman sisters may have another hundred million or so to blow before they go broke. But how long will that hold out given the burn rate of Mr. Raniere?Vanguard, who is described in the recent press article as both a “compulsive gambler” and “crazy,” seems to be repeating past mistakes.Consumer Buyline, Raniere’s last major business enterprise, tanked after numerous lawsuits and substantial legal fees overwhelmed it.Is history simply repeating itself? It has been said that those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.barbara-bouchey_tn.jpgIf the Bronfmans go broke they will likely be able to fall back upon forgiving family resources. But at least one purported victim of Raniere’s financial schemes isn’t so forgiving. Not an heiress Barbara Bouchey (photo right) worked for years to accumulate her assets. She then reportedly lost $1.7 million betting on Raniere.Ms. Bouchey wants her money back.
Five or six years ago, I was urged to check this group out, by a friend who had been to a few sessions. I was looking to improve myself and my financial situation, so I attended an Introductory-type meeting. I heard about all the corporate groups around the country who were coming to Albany for this very special training, and vaguely learned how it could help me. What I remember the most is that it cost thousands of dollars, which made it impossible for me to “join” – but they were relentless in telling me how important it was to borrow the money – whatever I had to do – because it was so worth it. Luckily, I stood my ground and was honest about my inability to pay(who is going to loan a person money for something like this that is a gamble, and not even really understood?), and they went on and on and on (and on) about how much they knew I would benefit by taking their course – after all, they were SO SUCCESSFULL! Well, apparently not successful enough to give people payment options – they needed the thousands up front. Anyone who wants you to take their course so badly can help make that possible. I am glad that I smelled something fishy and didn’t get involved.
I have to say, I WAS a big fan of the Dahli Lama until he recognized Raniere, then I lost total respect for him. The accusations against him and his cult ahve been known for years, yet still the Dahli honored him. It makes me sick. It’s time to stop them before they drag down more good people.
It ;ooks like most of the funds from the Bronfman brats went into accounts or companies owned by Nancy Salsman. Wonder how come the IRS isn't going after her to pay taxes on all of that unreported income?
Let's not tee up Ms Bouchey as a hero here She appears to be something more than the check writing girl she contends she was. When will some DA or AG grow some balls and start tossin some of these people in jail?Mr Cuomo, are you home? But the biggest question is this: will there be any $ left to support Val Keehn and Ron Kim's future campaigns?
This Vanguard sure gets a whole lot of ass, though!HAIL VANGUARD!You da man!!!!!
Since local DAs Murphey and Soares have already been compromised, Cuomo is the last hope. But becausehe'll need lots of money to run for guv, he can probably be bought off by the Bronfmans too.Maybe we should all stop paying taxes. It seems to work for Rightguard and Perfect.
I'm not quite following the drama here (yes, i admit: I read the thing!):The goon making the claims to Yuri that he was sent by Mr Bronfman:- was he? if so, he had somehow infiltrated this whole fuck fest without Raniere catching on? Which might lead to him being fired 30 days later (the girls found out)?or- was he BS'ing? why? 'cus Raniere told him to pretend so as a way of determining Yuri's loyalty? Can anyone clue me in?Who wants to make a movie out of this insanity? I want to play Raniere, so I get laid all the time.
So was Raniere boning our very own Mayor Val Keejn? Did she let him in the Mayor’s office? Did he do her on the Mayor’s Desk? Is that what drove her husband to be admitted to the Mid-Hudson Psychiatric facility?
While this cult leader is indeed evil, anyone who knows Barbara knows that her motivation for distancing herself from the cult and its leader is money. She is not a hero.
But a woman scorned....
You are on the right trail with your theories about Mr K.The cult intructs its followers to cut all ties with those who do not believe themselves.Apparently, he didn't believe.I think this explains the madness of the Dems for Change, doesn't it?

Anyone who posts anything on any of the NXIVM related blogs should be on the lookout for Steve Rambam aka Steve Rombom aka Rambo. For a picture and background info on this guy, go to:http://steverombom.org/. He's apparently been hired to intimidate anyone who speaks out against the cult. Very f***ing scary!
