One of the overlooked aspects of the last city election were the results of our neighbor to the north. In Wilton NY with the surprise election of the teabagging duo of Robert Pulsifer and Robert Rice upstate politics took a sudden turn to right, upsetting the long entrenched GOP way of handling Wilton politics. They wasted no time in quickly moving to eliminate the position of Town Planner held by Kate Maynard at their first Town Board meeting.
Kate Maynard, AICP joined the Town of Wilton in April 2008. Kate came to the Town with 10 years in public and private sector planning including comprehensive planning, economic development, open space conservation, and development review. She is a Nationally Certified Planner and received her Master's degree in Regional and Urban Planning from SUNY Albany in 2003. She lives in the Town of Wilton with her husband and two children.
Even long time Town icon Roy McDonald who is Wilton’s State Senator and had previously served 23 years as Town and County Supervisor was taken aback.
McDonald said "We've got a good thing going in Wilton - don't screw it up," he added” What I learned on that board is that there is a lot I don't know. We rely on professionals to help our committees make the proper decisions. Exit 16 is going to be dramatically different in the future and we want to do it right. We've promised public services and lower taxes and we did that. This is a place people are looking at to move to and the development needs to be done right."
One only has to look to the intersection of Route 50 and Old Gick Road and stare in amazement at the Veterans Park that is marooned with no public access. The names carefully craved in granite that no human being will ever read. The sidewalks that begin and end and go nowhere. Really it doesn’t take a Masters Degree to see, this is one fucked up intersection. I wonder did the workman chuckle to themselves when they built this crap. So I would guess an augment can be made that Wilton needs a planner.
Now no one that I know has ever called Witon Politics a hotbed of Marxist liberals, that is until Robert Pulsifer and Robert Rice came along. Running on a campaign of less regulation, less government and lower taxes {this in a town with no town tax} they were swept into office by a more and more conservative electorate. I can hardly wait to see what they do next. But we live in a Democracy and they never hid what they stood for or what they’ll do. So I will give them points for being honest.
That brings us to Saratoga. One can see after our own election the citizens of Saratoga had completely rejected the Democratic platform of higher taxes and no reduction of City services. The Republicans of Saratoga Springs have a long tradition of intelligence, moderation and above all discipline. That discipline makes them loath to turn on one of their own. The beneficiary of that discipline has been Commissioner of Public Work Skip Scirocco but one has to wonder how much longer that will hold.
Rank and file Republicans are in a more and more conservative mood and many are calling for the out and out ouster of Scirocco. Skip already finds himself ostracized on the City Council and many just wish he would join the DFC wing of the Democratic Party to save them the aggravation of being forced to primary him. It is an open secret that the Democratic Committee drained its treasury through secret contributions to Scirocco. Either way it seems that these are the last 2 years of Scirocco and if the Democratic Committee doesn’t change its policies and admit its failures they are destined to become irrelevant in future years.
I can only hope Sarah Palin doesn’t stop in for a visit to congratulate her protégés in Wilton

Jasper Nolan has spent 30 years covering Scirocco’s ass. But even he’s had enough now. The republicans face a real backlash if they continue to back this clown. There is no real mechanism to throw someone out of a Party but the Council has made it quite clear that want no part of him

Kate Maynard threatens those in Wilton who would have their way with land use issues. Wilton missed its opportunity to create an exit 15 that could have prevented the pedestrianless wasteland that exits today. A paid planner is not a partisan position. She has the potential for objectively making those decisions that those local developers and politicians cannot. The future is assuring that Wilton doesn’t have to look back realizing that self-serving politicians have their way so that the home grown disaster that befell Glens Falls years ago with shortsighted planning and zoning that destroyed any hope for that City to recover from its rampant development to its exits. Wilton has a chance to challenge itself from itself. For a community with little taxes, it is a small investment.

I was wrong about New York Gov. David Paterson, but I am glad I was. Paterson is the only politician in office today who has the guts to propose the sweeping budget cuts needed to save the state. He must really scare the shit out of a few special interest groups for them to go so far out on a limb to start and pass on these sure fire guaranteed tips. I was fooled but so was everyone else.
Kate Maynard is a Nationally Certified Planner. Please look up her credentials, and EDUCATE yourself at the AICP website as to the skills of a Certified planner. There is no one in the Town of Wilton qualified to do her job; there are very few in the Northeast at that. As a Wilton resident, I have witnessed that she has been professional, comprehensive and analytical on the job; working lengthy hours to ensure that long term planning is in place. We are at the threshold of new growth & job opportunity in our Town. We should be using our energies to focus on community initiatives, job creation, solar technology, economic opportunities, and enhancing our quality of life. We have complex issues which require sound planning. Without her grant writing skills, the Town will lose out on CRITICAL grants and funds, both at the State and Federal levels.
There is no foundation to eliminate Kate's position.
She is not "planning" a party, but working with town officials to implement a vision for our future.
She doesn't create policy; she reviews and enforces codes in place. As the word "subordinate" role came up 5 or more times at last night's Town Board meeting, I have to wonder whether we would even be having this debate if a male was seated in her chair. It's 2010, not the 1920's. How is it that some cannot give equal status to a very competent and smart women who ? We are fortunate to have Kate and the expertise that she brings to Wilton. Let's make sensible decisions which benefit the entire community, in the spirit of PUBLIC SERVICE.

Wiltonites should realize that their Wilton Planner works for them - carefully providing oversight and direction for development according to their Master Plan. Kate has every reason to prove herself for the benefit of the residents and those who have loudly protested this small investment because of self-serving interests and power delusions having little to do with the welfare of Wilton should be shown the door. Don't listen to pathetic diversionary stories about the cost of paving roads. This is about smart responsible community development oversight - Be responsible for a planned community.

I see Mayor Johnson was able to trim some more deadwood out of the moribund City Hall Staff. Seems Administrative clerk Lynn Browne was suspended without pay because of performance-related issues, seems Browne, who made $38,482 couldn’t be bothered making trips to the bank with all her makeup and such. Some of the uncashed checks date as far back as July and August. I bet she never forgot to cash her paycheck.
Why to keep the pressure on the slackers Mayor. Now if someone could just get rid of Office supervisor and head of City Hall CSEA Katherine Moran, who made $62,258 in 2009 the city would really be making headway in cleaning up corruption and waste.
It’s funny that the Senate expelled Sen. Hiram Monserrate for beating his girl friend. If the city held its employees to the same standard and fired every joker on the payroll who hit his wife, mother, girlfriend, ex-girlfriend, ex-wife, children and small pets the cities workforce would be cut in half.
I still think the cops should seize control of the Man-cave. The Cops, Firemen, City Hall employees and DPW workers have been cut, laid off and threatened with reduced pay and benefits. All this while Commissioner "Skippy" remodels his office..not once but for the second time in two years. What the hell is going on in City Hall that allows this kind of foolishness to continue?? And, let's not forget about the ugly scaffolding decorating the side of City Hall these days! Instead of remodeling offices in the Public Works Dept. Maybe the DPW should be fixing the roof-edge ice problem that plagues City Hall and threatens the safety of pedestrians along the Lake Avenue sidewalk. You don't have to be a "tea bagger" to understand how incompetent this really makes the City look!!!
Now, if we only get Jr, Joe"Big Deal" O'Neil to similarly dump a load of raw sewage out on the City's Weibel Avenue Compost site and then call the State DEC, like he did when he was the CSEA union chief against Commissioner McTygue, then and only then, we'll assuredly all save a lot of money, time and effort getting rid of this Jackass Scirocco once and for all out of city government.
