Of unsolved murders, blotched investigations and bad juries, an everlasting Saratoga legacy.

Many things are coming out of the Saratoga's St Patrick’s day mayhem and it reminded me of people I had know who were brutally slain and whose killers still walk the Earth today.

Sheila Shepherd a stunningly beautiful girl who used to go to the Hub back when I lived above it was killed in 1980. Her death is but a faded memory for many but I am sure her family and friends are still haunted everyday. I could not find a trace of her story on the net but I hope as more old records are digitalized her story will live on until one day the Scumbag or Bags who killed her are caught. I also remember the blistering criticism the police came under at the time and in particular the criticism that Chief Cole's father Eugene in particular faced about the handling of evidence and the general conduct of the investigation.

Pam DeVizzio was a popular waitress and bartender whose killing was particually brutal. The Saratoga Springs native was found July 6, 1988, on a Northumberland roadside, 11 miles away from downtown Saratoga Springs she was 28-year-old.She had been savagely beaten. She was last seen alive about 4:15 a.m. July 5 leaving Madame Jumel's, a popular Caroline Street bar at the time. Ironically it is only a stones throw from were Ryan Rossley was run down.

These are links to her story.

Although my focus here is Saratoga there are many other unsolved murders in the county
The Saratoga County Sheriffs have a Web site for tips in unsolved cases
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
My mistake. there is no web site, I guess I gave Bowen to much credit.

And finally while many are critical of the slowness of an arrest in the Ryan Rossley case, I will give Chief Cole credit for going slowly and getting all his t's crossed.

In one of the saddest cases in Saratoga history and one that was investigated by the Chiefs father Eugene, many people were outraged and shocked when the son of prominent city surgeon and all round great Saratogian was found not guilty of the killing of a young man named Younes, who was run down and left for dead on Kaydeross Road by Saratoga lake on March 5 1983 at roughly 3;35am. He was hit on a road leading to a very popular bar and dance club called the Rafters for all you transplants out there. Despite overwhelming evidence that he was the driver and even with positive, then state of the art forensic tests done on the car by the State police BCI unit, a jury of his peers found Jim Dorsey Jr age 2o, only son of Surgeon James Dorsey, of North Broadway not guilty of the felony count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Later in a case that would mirror the future OJ Simpson case he was found guilty in a civil suit and was forced to pay damages to the widow and child of Mr Younes. From what I understand Mr. Dorsey went on to college and law school after the acquittal, and is a practicing attorney today. Be grateful for your second chance, Mr.Younes never got one.
You can read more on this case at

So by all means Chief take your time and do it right.

I would like to thank the Gazette for digitizing your old papers. You are an asset to the community and your commitment to the public even when I know your paper is fiscally struggling puts the Saratogian to shame.

I understand that this might open up some old wounds for the innocent and I apologize for that. But these stories are important so the mistakes of the past are not repeated. And maybe, just maybe this might jog somebodies memory so that justice may be done, and a killer can be taken off the street and the families might find some peace.

And although its nice the Saratoga Police have a pretty facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Saratoga-Springs-NY/Saratoga-Springs-Police-Department/213770187937
It might be nice if you had a cold case Saratoga Police web site where people could come and try to remember or give tips. Remember people talk, and as time passes they feel safe and loosen up.

Hey but what the fuck do I know I'm just a stupid unpaid blogger who would like to see a little justice before I die.

Added
I have been contacted and asked to add two more names one dead and one poor child missing.

Another murdered young women is Christina White who was were last seen alive in or near mobile home parks along Geyser Road in 2005 Mind you, it took sheriff’s investigators nine months to find her body and the only reason they did was because a hiker walking his dog through the forest happened to stumble over her remains. Christina’s murderer continues to walk free and the sheriff’s department continues to not concern itself with the case.

In the Dorsey case he was pushed into turning himself in after his father noticed the car with damage to it at his home. He had just heard of the hit and run at the lake. After conversing with his older sister who too is an attorney in town(LaBoda)the father brought him to the station. In the trial his attorney for the defense John McMahon found that the paint on the body had discrepencies. There was red paint from two different cars. That lead to reasonable doubt.

How about the abductions from Geyser Crest and Creek and Pines Trailer Park in Milton... if I recall correctly one of those girls was delivering magazines...? Those were pretty low profile and we never hear about them anymore.

I know one well know area female singer who won’t be going to Rochester NY to perform anytime soon. Seems back in the eighties while an art student at RIT she killed a young man on his way to work at 4am. She was convicted and got a slap on the wrist moved back to Saratoga and the whole community welcomed her home like it was no big deal. But some of us remember Sharon

Attorney claims driver in fatal Saratoga hit-and-run was fleeing from attackers
By LEIGH HORNBECK, Staff writer
Last updated: 12:23 p.m., Thursday, March 25, 2010 SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The man accused of hitting a man with his car and killing him last week was running for his life, according to the defendant's lawyer.
Gerard Amedio, who represents Travis M. Carroll, 23, said Carroll was attacked in the street around 4 a.m. last Thursday. Among his attackers, Amedio said, was Ryan Rossley, 27, the man Carroll hit.
"He was threatened with a knife, he was hit with a belt buckle," said Amedio of Carroll. "He was covered with bruises."
Amedio said Carroll ran from his attackers back to his car, then drove down the street and accidentally hit Rossley.
Rossley, a city resident, died about 12 hours after he was hit.
Carroll was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and tampering with physical evidence, both felonies. If convicted, he could serve up to 7 years in state prison.
Carroll is currently being held in the Saratoga County Jail without bail.

Gene the fixer! That's a beauty. That fat fuck couldn't get out of his own way. Not surprising to think he possibly could have covered up any of these crimes.

There was another unsolved case in maybe the '70's. A young woman found dead tied to a bed in an apartment I believe on Church St. All sorts of rumors about a prominent local figure being involved but I don't think this one was ever solved either. Does anyone else remember this?

Toga watchdog said...

Sheila Shepard mentioned by Ben was tied to the bed. That one people should look into the boyfriend of her again. He was also mentioned years later in the Pam Devizzio murder. Not to mention names but he was the son of former Golden Grille owner. He was a suspect!

Ben lives on said...

That was Sheila Shepherd, she was found naked and spread eagled and tried to her bed.She had gagged to death on underwear that was stuffed in her month. After she was dead an autopsy found a knife that was was stuck in her chest was done after her death. Engene Cole was said to have removed the knife with his bare hand forever tainting the evidence. The police were also said to have contaminating the whole crime scene leading to widespread speculation they were covering up for a VIP.

What about the young man murdered in the dugout at East Side Rec? His family never saw any justice either. Saratoga's Finest at it's best.

I had forgotten about Robert Ford killed by police

Back in 87 or 88 a guy was struck and dragged to his death on Rte 50 in Wilton. No justice was ever observed in that. I don't recall his name. I met him as he was working at the scout camp. Nice enough fellow with a family.

I would look very hard at the son of the former owner of the Golden Grill as the killer of Pam Devizzio. I know him personally quite well and it seems right up his alley. I didn't know that he was the boyfriend of Sheila Shepard who was also murdered.

Anonymous said...

omg why havent they looked into the son of the owner of golden grill (two wonderful people killed) I know pam personally - family! so very very sad.... those girls deserve justice and there families

You write with extreme poignance. I found your sight by doing some unrelated research, and was mesmerized.

I haven't lived in Saratoga for over thirty years, but I used to work at the Rafter's. I attended school with a girl named kelly, she was very pretty and played guitar beautifully for a young woman. She might have some insight.
