I have had enough of Amejo Amyot.

First let me say that decent people can disagree over abstract art. I’m not even convinced exactly where the best location is for the cities 9/11 memorial. Right now I’m leaning towards the drink hall as the best spot but I will be happy to engage fellow citizens in an honest conversation and yes even with those who disagree with me.

Lance Ingmire, a prominent and outspoken member of the Heritage Area Visitor Center Board has been quoted as saying the monument is “dripping in blood” I believe that Lance is lobbying to have it placed at New York State Military Museum as a way to draw visitors to the area. Then it will be more at home with that Museums exhibits that are all “dripping in blood”

But Lance is a nice enough guy and he does spend a great deal of time volunteering for the community.

Who I do take issue with is Amejo Amyot.. A rich ultra-liberal who considers herself Saratoga’s celebrity artist or as the cities official "Artist in Residence."

Fucking spare me. Amyot who likes to call herself the founder of the Arts District on Beekman Street,{which is basically a collection of bars and restaurants with a lot of “FOR RENT” signs} has been known to browbeat and bully fellow Saratoga Artists who dare to question her opinions or criticize her own work.

Amejo is just bitter she wasn’t consulted or even considered for the commission.Thank God {then it would really have been a pile of scap}

Newsflash dear; your buddy Valarie Keehn lost the election 4 years ago. You don’t really matter anymore.
I was at a City Council meeting where Amyot called the Twin Towers a monument to American greed and went on to disparage her fellow local artists as “embarrassing”
VIDEO HERE.

As I sat there and heard this tirade from the tired old bitter Women, who lives in the lap of luxury, while cuddled by her wealthy and successful husbands I wanted to brush my teeth. “Champion of the poor” she calls herself, “friend of staving artists.” My ass.

You know honey my whole life I’ve been poor but managed to struggle along.Partronizing rich women like you always rubbed me the wrong way.

“Symbol of American greed” check hubbies portfolio lately dear? Want to see a real “Symbol of American greed”? Check out the The Ayco Company,on Broadway you know the subsidy of the Goldman Sachs Company? The place your bud attorney Peter Martin fucked the investors and made millions?

Then again if you really think the memorial is a “Monument to American Greed” what better place for it than next to a real “Monument to American Greed”

Why not have her find a spot for the sculpture in her beloved "Arts District". Oh, wait, she wouldn't want that, you can't charge rent if there's a sculpture there. Glad you're getting back to Saratoga some more. We need you out there!

If the speaker gets your blood a boilin', please separate the MESSENGER from the MESSAGE. Her step-by-step primer on the Process of Public Art is spot-on and used Nationwide... hell, globally--

FIRST the City designates a LOCATION. Then an RFP asks The Public for submissions, designs that will respect The Setting as the Artists pursue their craft. Then after periods of Public Comment, qualified Judges do that arduous job of picking "The Best."

The Arts Council chose to thunder ahead with a closed process. John- You may be the only person commanding enough respect to ask the Arts Council to flat-out tell you what slate of artists they considered, and what criteria dictated their selection/appointment/anointment.

HAD the Open PROCESS been followed, any "City Center" submissions would have been suitable and smaller... as per the specs in the RFP. Any "Visitors' Center" submissions would have been less abstract, maybe a Water Sculpture for a City built on Springs... again, there would be broad guidance in the RFP.

As it is, we have a massive sculpture with no home in site. Hate the writer, call her names, damn her to a burning purgatory for all eternity. But at least SHE will have a home. The arrogance of the Arts Council has left them hawking a homeless sculpture, destined to wander the County forever...

...that's IF it ever gets off the scrap yard that nurtured its insatiable appetite for hallowed rusted steel.

Your insticts are correct, John.

I went to a Charter Change information session. Ms A attended and commented that she was all for charter change because it would open up the opportunity for women to serve. Her logic was that the current council struture required skills that women don't typically have.

Kind of insulting to women, wouldn't we say? Because she doesn't understand things like accounting, finance, rules of order, management, etc..she thinks we need do dumb down the whole system to make room for her and people like her.

It's people like this who represent everything that has gone wrong with this city.

I appreciate Kyle explaining the process. I can understand that Ms. Amyot may be displeased with how this sculpture was selected and the RFP involved and/or ignored. But reallY? Rationalizing the murder of innocent people? Waiters? firemen? People from Saratoga were murdered on 9/11. That was OK w/ Ms. Amyot?? Mr. Kauth deserved to be murdered! His children left w/o a father? Seriously?? I think it is clear there is only one person in this entire drama who is devoid of sensativity, civility and taste. Pathetic!

Let's see here, we have a jealous art-protester who says that the WTC deserved to be hit because it was a symbol of 'American greed.'

You have another art-protester who has no background in art but condemns the sculpture as 'ugly,' calls it 'unsafe' but he is not an engineer (the engineers have said it is safe) and has lied about the openness of the process to create the sculpture.

Then you have another art-protester who calls for the sculpture to be 'broken or to steal it.'

Finally we have the Visitor Center board who thinks patriotism means excluding patriotic artistic expression.

The question is why would anyone ever visit Saratoga if these horrible people typified the sort of citizen who lived here? Not many and that is a hardball fact. Honestly I must say that I have not seen such an unpleasant group of art-haters anywhere else in the world. That is their one overriding distinction. Yeccchhh.

In the small village of New York City I spent twelve years leading weekend walking tours encompassing Architecture, History, and Public Art for Jackie Onassis' beloved Municipal Art Society, the 92nd Street Y, and the Art Deco Society. My favorite tour to lead was 90 minutes at the WTC complex, including a detailed background on Fritz Koening and his bronze sphere in the plaza.

No boasting here. Just trying to educate the self-righteous elitists preaching from the Gansevoort Ironworks.

The Ballad of Phyllis Amyot said...

Her real name is Phyllis Amyot she was married to Judge Ferradino who caught her in bed with a black guy. He frowned on this and divorced her. Then she after spending countless hours with her vibrator and voodoo doctors she discovered that her real name was Amejo and she went to work teaching other women how do use their vibrators.

Then she thought she would take up art. After buying some Play-Doh she declared that she was a great artist and using her new husband’s money along with government money founded the Beekman St Art District.

Now drunk and deluded by that great success she feels no project in the city can proceed without her approval.
And that is why the old broad is so pissed off.
Her feeling is hurt and she is out of batteries for her vibrator

I have known Phyllis for many years and I’m glad her comments are on tape this time.

I concur with everything you just said but I am not responsible for the merit or lack of merit of other peoples comments.
I as moderator am responsible for allowing it and will defend that.

I have watched and heard Phyllis rant and rave and hiss and catcall at public forums for years. I have seen her browbeat and ridicule soft spoken people into submission.
Frankly she is a bully.
Calling her a living abortion though tasteless, offensive and humorless is not a physical threat and since Phyllis is a proponent of late term abortions somewhat Apropo.

Would suggest that anyone who thrusts themselves into the public spotlight by insulting their peers grow a very think skin, I know I have.
The comment stays.

Now that makes me lol. Why? To diffuse tension around the tragedies of life we have humor.

unwanted pregnanacies are already a tragedy. Termination doubles the tragedy The left knee jerk on this is off that's why we go in circles on it.

Still has to be legal but rarely used. Education on contraception is being underfunded by the right. Perfect f'n storm if idiocy.

Being slut is no excuse for an unwanted pregnancy. Education is lacking for ho's these days.

Really stoopid to underfund Family Planning.

So this ho Amejo - hey that rhymes! educated though she is thinks it's ok to fuck and shuck?

I have not seen the sculpture nor do I plan to until its finished, I truly believe it isn’t fair to judge it till complete

The Drink Hall would be a great location and a draw to that end of Broadway.

The whole thing reminds me of the 15 year battle against the Carousel led by respected Saratogian Mimi Boster. People were hysterical in their opposition. People claimed it would ruin the peace and quiet of Congress Park. Because of this senseless and misguided hysteria an entire generation was denied the simple joy of riding a beautiful and historical throwback to bygone era. I hope you won’t deny another generation of children the chance to experience a important part of history. To feel it and touch history not from a hundred years ago but from the new century.
I hope and believe the adults in this city will do the right thing and not listen to the mob bent on censorship

The only thing missing is the base/pedestal... which will be dictated by the site. Tuesday's Council meeting will be the time and place to decide the fate of the real 25-foot sculpture, not to be confused with a 25-word fuzzy and vague concept of a proposal. Any personal opinion on the issue demands familiarity with the completed sculpture... as proudly posted on the Arts Council website--

Tempered by Politics?
August 15, 2011 at 5:30 pm by Dennis Yusko

A sculpture built to bring Americans together ten years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks is tearing some apart on the eve of the anniversary.

Some city residents oppose placing Tempered by Memory, created by two New York artists with steel from the World Trade Center, on the lawn of the Saratoga Springs Visitor Center. Visitor center officials, a local artist and some preservationists believe that the 22-foot-high artwork would clash with the historic streetscape of that section of Broadway, which includes buildings and monuments from 1915. Some in the group call for the monument to go on Lake Avenue near the state Military Museum and city firehouse.

The clash has caused the City Council to skip a vote on the project’s approval, leading many to believe that the sculpture will not be displayed by Sept. 11. On Monday, the director of Saratoga Arts, the main sponsor of the project, blasted its opponents and members of the City Council for the delay in a letter to supporters that was obtained by the Times Union. Drawing a comparison to the 2004 political ad that attacked decorated Vietnam veteran John Kerry for his war credentials, director Joel Reed said opponents were “swiftboating” the 9/11 memorial.

Reed accused city Democrats of opposing the project for partisan gain during an election year, and Republicans who control the City Council of treating Sept. 11 as “an arbitrary date on the calendar.”

“Democrats attacking a community arts project created by a rainbow coalition of artists, unions, small and large businesses, and individuals from all walks of life? Republicans minimizing the significance of
the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, and shunting aside a project that deeply resonates with veterans and first responders? And both throwing Saratoga Arts and the chance for community unity on 9/11 under the bus in the hope of picking up a few votes,” Reed’s letter says.

He urged supporters to contact elected officials and speak in favor of the project at Tuesday’s City Council meeting in City Hall. Mayor Scott Johnson has scheduled a discussion on the topic, but no vote.

Tempered by Memory was originally slated for in front of the Saratoga Springs City Center. City officials changed that location last month to the visitor center, saying the sculpture was too large.

Several speakers protested the new site at the last City Council meeting. Michael Messinger, co-chairman of the visitor center’s board, and Lance Ingmire, a board member, said the modern sculpture would threaten the historic integrity of the area around the center. They suggested putting the art on Lake Avenue.

“It would be reprehensible to rush this process without fully vetting other locations,” Ingmire said.
Artist Amejo Amyot of the Beekman Art District took a harder line. She accused Saratoga Arts of a “serious breach of arts in public places etiquette.” The organization failed to invite calls for entries from other artists for the project before choosing sculptors John Van Alstine of Wells, Hamilton County, and Noah Savett of Gansevoort, Amyot said. “If we were to honor anything about this tragedy, it should be the people we lost,” she said. “The sculpture has no redeeming aesthetic or artistic value.”

Other speakers said that the sculpture would draw tourists and move those who see it. The city’s Design Review Commission and state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation support “Tempered by Memory” at the visitor center, Reed said. In the letter, he accused unnamed artists of “grinding the axe of personal resentment,” and opponents of “using party fundraisers and blogs as forums for undercutting the project.”

Saratoga Arts wants the monument up by Sept. 11, Reed said in an interview Monday, adding that it has made commitments to project donors, the artists, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, from whom it received the shards of steel, iron workers and of course, the 9-11 victims.

“If you feel that the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, and its commemoration should transcend city politics, and this unique artwork should have a place in our city, ask (city leaders) to stop stalling and vote to accept the project,” Reed wrote.
