Not content with pissing off the Veitch clan, I will move on to piss off various area non-profits. Over Easter weekend the Glens Falls Post Star ran an excellent feature on the high salaries of directors of area non-profits. Since these organizations actively solicit donations and enjoy tax free status their annual IRS form 990 are supposed to be made public including the compensation levels of key employees, at least in practice that’s how it’s done. Some do some don’t. I will list some local groups along with forms if available.
First the local list from the Post Star. The entire story and it’s a good one here
Remember most of these figures are a year or two old.Current numbers are higher
Wesley senior living facilities CEO J. Brian Nealon, $216,887
Skidmore College President Philip Glotzbach, who earned $470,000 in 2010.
Saratoga Hospital anesthesiologist Dr. Gordan Kuhar, who runs the hospital’s Pain Management Center, earned more than $860,000.
The president of the Yaddo artists’ compound, Elaina Richardson, earned $211,000.
And these are the two that personally piss me off the most
Marcia White, president and executive director of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, took home $281,000. Form 990 here
And this clown who rents the Silver Bay YMCA to cult guru and alleged pedophile Keith Raniere for his 11 day birthday orgy
Silver Bay Association for Christian Conferences and Training CEO David Kisselback, $131,500. Form 990 here
Now here are a few more local ones I dug up
Saratoga EOC known as SCEOC Ms. Julie Hoxsie, $83,127 in 2010 Form 990 here
Saratoga Bridges AKA NYSARC Inc. Saratoga County Chapter (Saratoga Bridges Foundation) Valarie Mutatori $171,821 Form 990 here
And this is interesting the Saratoga affordable housing group.
All the usual list of characters, Executive Director Ed Spychalski, Dennis Brunelle etc etc but the surprise here as these are unpaid positions is A J Arpey Inc a contractor who made $1,074,941 in 2010. Form 990 here
My final thoughts on this. While many of you call these charities, the truth is they're businesses and industries. They have replaced the factories in our postindustrial economy.
Many of these businesses also throw elegant galas in the summer months that I find personally amusing while understanding they are lucrative for our local hospitality industry.
The problem as I see it, isn’t with the poorly paid rank and file workers. None of which makes anything near what the lowest paid full time dpw laborer makes. Many workers in the Saratoga Hospital go without health insurance, unable to afford the premiums and rent at the same time. I find something deeply disturbing when the people taking care of me in Cancer treatment can’t afford the services they provide.
We pay the people who care for our most vulnerable citizens the least amount of money, while the CEO's of these same non-profits flit around the dance floor at some soiree while attendees praise their selfless "work" Then we have Marcia White complaining about attendance at SPAC. News flash Marcia your prices are too high and your bloated Salary is a large part of the problem.
There are exceptions to the rule. Skidmore pays better and still offers Health Insurance for $300 to $500 a month. Still a far cry from any government worker. Ms. Julie Hoxsie, $83,127 at EOC actually seems a little low. I’m sure when Ed Spychalski sees this he must wonder what all the fuss is about, probably thinks he’s underpaid. Come to think of it since the same crowd of “good citizens” seem to inhabit the boards of these non-profits it’s easy to see how Brunelle came to defend his salary.
Till next time. Want to do something that is really charitable and good? Adopt a dog or a cat, an older mix breed is best. Then take care of them and love them for whatever time they have left. Yea and next time you hear a city worker bitch about his pay. Tell him to fuck off and try working for a non-profit as a rank and file worker.

As a voluteer for the Saratoga County Animal shelter I Thank You JT For mentioning the awesome act of kindness of adopting a shelter cat or dog or bunny etc.
Today is the Saratoga County Animal Shelter's 34 Year Anniversary. The shelter opened on April 10th, 1978.
Isn't This Hoxley the one at EOC who former Director John Kauffman lost a lawsuit for his verbal attacks on her and eventually fired her? She sued to get her job back after he illegally fired her. He's another scumbag.
Glotzbach's $400k is small potatoes when you compare it to what RPI, another "not-for-profit" is paying Shirley Jackson. $2.9 mil a year according to Wikipedia, and that's before you get into the houses, the security, and what she makes outside of RPI for the numerous boards she serves on. A quick google search will catch anyone up to speed on the unrest that's caused between Shirley and the faculty - who've faced cuts in most of Jackson's first 10 years.
At the same time, Shirley Jackson might be one of the great minds in the world, and RPI certainly among the best technical schools in the country, if not the world. If RPI felt Jackson was making too much, there would be a line of suitors offering to pay her the same, or more.
One thing (probably the ONLY thing) that is similar about Glotzbach and Jackson is that both of them work at private institutions. Aside from allowing donors to deduct contributions from their taxes, and letting these institutions avoid paying sales tax on purchases, the money isn't actually coming from taxes levied against citizens. Both of these institutions are able to exist on their own.
To really get an idea of what's "too much", I think you need to have a comparison of the operating budgets of each institution, as well as the salaries of the directors in question. If Elaina Richardson is able to bring in, say $1,000,000+ a year by directly securing contributions and maintaining an environment that nurtures the creativity of elite artists, paying her $200k doesn't seem like a bad deal at all. To be clear, I have no idea how much revenue she generates for Yaddo, and that's just a number being thrown out there.
Marcia Clark certainly is the name on this list who jumps out as everything that can be wrong with a not-for-profit. She not only HASN'T been able to run a self supporting operation but she IS being subsidized by funds that come from taxes levied against citizens.
At some point, our tax strapped state will need to re-examine who qualifies for non-profit status. A simple way would be to limit a percentage of each groups operating budget that go to salaries and adminstration. Pretty much, if a bank wouldn't give you a loan for your business, because your business plan has too much money tied up in salaries and benefits, you shouldn't be getting non-profit status.
I can't believe none of the Saratoga City School District administrators made the list. All of them make well over $100K with unreal benefit packages, and they all just gave themselves raises even though they're unsure how they're going to make the budget work without raising taxes or cutting programs.
"Dr." Janice White is the absolute cats pajamas of wasted "civil servant" salary. She loves using the title, although it's not even a real PhD, just a night school doctorate from Sage. Best part is, it seems she somehow got this "doctorate" without having a single
published work. Must be pretty easy to defend a thesis that no one has ever even read.
Because they are government workers, not private non-profet
This is the same way I feel about billionaire banking "philanthropists" who are the worst kind.
The biggest secret in Saratoga County?
Well, here's the question that no one has been able to answer for 20+ years:
How much did Joe Dalton and Linda Toohey get paid (including benefits, retirement, vehicles, food and booze allowances etc. by the Greater Saratoga Chamber of Commerce?
Keith Raniere wishes he could sell group health insurance.
Let's not forget some that fly under the radar like executive Director of Albany Housing among other who get paid by their Nonprofits. Albany Director makes $135,000 from Housing Authority but flys under the radar getting over 100,000 more from nonprofit.
Don't forget our beloved and prestigious Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and their annual shame of giving 26.3% of their donations into the till of the Executive Director. Of the $165,052 SSPF took in for 2010, they paid $43,436 to Exec. Dir. Samantha Bosshart.
And of course there's the infamous Red Cross. A bit further away (the CEO anyway) but none the less another group with a sordid past.
http://www.damninteresting.com/retired/can-we-trust-the-red-cross/
The comments after the article are very revealing. The entire Red Cross history must have been management reading material for Bed Bug Edy and Brunelle.
Let's not forget that $500,000+ that Commissioner Franck made while using his commissioner status.
Anonymous 6:48--that's not my understanding re Albany Housing Authority Director. Can you provide some documentation?
@ 7:14 It's called a FOIL. Make the inquiry, it's all there.
I WANT to be a BILLIONAIRE
Remember Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) still in operation?
CEO – Michael Lakow and Director Diana Pikulski make combined salaries of $481,273. They were exposed last year in the NY Times article, Ex-Racehouses Starve as Charity Fails, http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/18/sports/18horses.html?pagewanted=all?
This did not stop them, heck their accountant gets paid over $200,000 and they are flush with $7 million in investments, http://www.trfinc.org/mc_images/category/113/2010_audited_financials.pdf
Yes, only in Saratoga can an organization be exposed as being morally corrupt and we host a gala five months later, Bobby Flay to head gala benefiting TRF? http://www.saratogian.com/articles/2011/07/01/news/doc4e0e72b449535717025974.txt
Moving ON
A lot of money for some in helping homeless
Legal Aid Society-Lillian Moy, executive director, $141,829
Supervising Attn- Mary Withington- $99,533
Fiscal Director, Shamim Huq, $70,000
Serve 60 people a year.
We also have the NON-PROFIT of the Adult Senior Center. Before you go bashing me, I like the older folks. What I don’t like is the way this organization gets $86,000 a year from the city (see 2012 budget), and only pays $1 rent (this rent includes utilities) and has been coming back to the city EVERY YEAR and gets $30-$60,000 a year to get roofs, walls, windows, generators, etc and the work is funneled through DPW. (Corrine Scirroco is on the Senior Center Board). Saratoga County also gives them money ($20,000). The executive director, Lois, has complained every year she has not gotten all she demanded. She makes about $43,000 including benefits).
NOW LET’s give a HAND to A GREAT NON-PROFIT
Michele Larkin, executive director of REBUILDING TOGETHER. Helps families and other organizations with repairs to their homes. She makes a whopping, $29,430 and her assistant, Marian Bigelow, earns $25,430. They served over 77 homes and 6 non-profits (one being the senior center- go figure). Michele had over 760 volunteers she co-ordinated!!! NON-PROFITS take a look at this organization. EMULATE.
The Preservation Hall, run by Teddy Foster, is another non-profit to emulate. Teddy gets paid $0 and puts her heart and soul into this community gem.
Franklin Community Center, with Kari Cushing, is also one of the best non-profits in the city!!
Just my two cents. JT, these all need to be explored and weed out the bloated directors!!
Nicely said Harry
Just some FYI about Saratoga Bridges director. Val drives a real nice Acura RDX leased by Bridges for her. And don't forget the free gas she gets from there. Also John Herrick, (former GOP headman for Saratoga) gets nice vehicle too.
And when they were so nice as to offer bonuses for the working folk there of $500, (after two years with no raises), they gave themselves bonuses of $50,000.
