Public Safety Commissioner “toothy” Christian Mathiesen "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

I went down to the City Council chambers this morning for the pre-agenda meeting at 9:30. For the first time in my life a News13 cameraman was there to film it. Seems the antics of this Council have become comedic relief for the Capital District.

So with thousands of Dave Matthews fans set to decent on the city this weekend what is Public Safety Commissioner “toothy” Christian Mathiesen main concern? You guessed it close the bars at 3am. Mind you he has been shot down by the State Liquor Authority who ruled that any change must include whole county. HERE.

He has been repeatedly told by Council members he doesn’t have the votes in the county legislature to change it. Even his biggest supporter on the issue John Franck Commissioner of Account said on the record “Chris I don’t feel comfortable telling the town of Day what time their bars should close”. Mathiesen is simply two stubborn to give up.
So this video is for you Chris my unstable friend. Till tomorrow night Goodbye.

When Dr. Painless says "And that's all I have," he's not kidding. This man has a one-note song and it is his interminably twisted take on the Neil Diamond classic. COME and SING with him-- "Streeet Caroline, DIE DIE DIE, noxious never brings us good, NO GOOD, NO GOOD, NO GOOD..."

"That's all I have."
Indeed.

I think that the Liquor authority is worried that if there are different closing times within the counties there will be an increase in drunk driving as people move en mass from one area (which may have been a bar they could walk to) to an area where they have to drive. For instance there may be a large group of Skidmore students partying downtown. As three o'clock approaches they decide to move the party somewhere else. So they get in their cars and drive (drunk) to Malta or Corinth or Wilton. This isn't good. The rule is there for a reason.

I thought he had Slugger..No?..WEEEEEELLLLL he'll always have the attendents on the third floor of four winds~~~~~~~!

Interesting...late night fees to cover over time costs to bar owners who are legally open mmmmm, how much does SPAC or Skidmore College pay the city for all the freebies we taxpayers bestow on those leeches??? What's good for the goose on Caroline Street is good for the gander at SPAC and Skidmore College, let's incorporate that into this Last Call Mallarkey!

Can someone FOIL the number of Fire Calls to Four Winds since the place opened? The calls to the Saratoga Hospital?

These are DAILY calls. Sometimes more than one DAILY call. Does the good doctor plan to charge an extra fee to these establishments, similar to his "ingenious" new plan to add a new tax to bars to pay for police presence?

"Adverse effects" repeated over and over and over in this Whereas, bs,
At least the good doctor changed it from being toxic to just adverse.
That's all I have.

DMB = a bunch of drunken frat boys on the lawn who cant handle their party favors. I love Dave but this old hippy hates the DMB scene. Ill be taking a break from KW neighborhood watch and passing on DMB (Ive seen him a bunch) and heading East to Worcester for the PHish from Vermont!!

12:09,

There's a very simple reason to have a uniform closing time in a county: Enforcement. The SLA barely has enough staff to keep up with the rules it has on the books today. You give municipalities the ability to change when bars can close, then suddenly you have disparate regulations from one city to the next town over. That's a logistical nightmare for them, and they're ultimately the enforcement arm that comes down on an establishment for an after hours violation. At least if you keep it to counties, there are only 62 different variables.

The SLA, however, views everything with a macro lens. They don't have the ability to monitor whether tweaks to their law create an outpouring of DWI offenses pinpointed in one area of the state. That's something law enforcement would need to contend with. Personally, I don't think you'd see much of a change there. Just they'd all be going home at 2:30 instead of trickling out of the bars over a several hours.

Incidentally, in honor of our dear public safety commissioner, I stayed out pounding brews until last call early Saturday morning. It was an exhilarating, but ultimately forgettable experience. Still, had I been queried about my druthers around 3:55 a.m. as I ordered that last pitcher of Labatt, I believe I would have engaged the questioner in a bare-knuckles bout simply out of principle.

It's pretty clear that Commissioner Mathiesen's ploy in forcing a vote tonight has nothing to do with sound Public Safety policy or good government.

He and Deputy Finneran are merely trying to embarrass Commissioner Franck and Commissioner Madigan.

The Mayor won't vote and Skippy's vote doesn't matter. Commissioner Toothless Tiger and his power-hungry deputy want control of the City and County Democratic Party.

If Commissioner Mathiesen was serious about fighting "crime and chaos," he would move to roll back closing time until 12:00 not 3:00.

The problem is that when no one else will play with you, you have to play with yourself.

Mr Bluster says:
The "adverse effects" have spilled over from Caroline St to Lake Ave and penetrated the Parting Glass.

It's toxic, and getting worse.
And now poker tournaments?

That's all I have.

The Grand Council of Societal Morality said...

This poker tournament shall be quashed; QUASHED, I say!

How the hell can this be legal?

We are now looking into what it takes to put this on the Agenda TONIGHT!

As a matter of fact, this has us so concerned, the proposed Last Call time is now MIDNIGHT!

Hey John, can we get an update on the NXIVM/O'Hara lawsuit if you have any status on it. It would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Mr Bluster says:

Poker has got to go

Drinking has got to be curtailed, no later than tea-time, 4 pm

Sex is not allowed, at all, it's toxic.

You people just need to get a grip.

It wasn't on the agenda, but it is an unwritten directive from the good doctor. News at 11

That's all I have.
