Small independent businesses, what makes Saratoga special.

Sometimes people forget what makes Saratoga Springs so special. No one comes here to see the police cars or DPW trucks driving by. No one gives much thought to the fire department. All of these are undoubtedly important but there not the driving force behind a successful city. People can visit and dine anywhere so why do so many choose Saratoga Springs?

It’s the people and the small independent businesses that make Saratoga Springs and downtown in particular so attractive. We are unique. Every small independent business represents someones American dream. They put their heart, soul and lifesaving into that dream. Like daredevils preforming without a net they ask little from the government while paying much into it. All they really want is for government to get out of the way. Every time you see a newly closed restaurant or shop closed, understand that for someone and maybe some family that closed sign might represent a broken lifelong dream. Each is a personal tragedy. While nothing can really be done I sometimes mourn the passing of a favorite spot.
Victorian Streetwalk, First Night and Chowderfest represent all that is good and exciting in Saratoga Springs. Politicians may call downtown, “toxic” and want to impose their moral standards on closing times and Civic Center venues but the citizens know.Saratoga Springs is successful in spite of city government not because of it.
Here’s to you small independent businesses of Saratoga Springs. WELL DONE.

I will be tweeting live during the storm all day tomorrow. So watch my tweeter feed

t's a mystery to me that what appeared to be a thriving independent business like "Madelines Coffee Shop" on Broadway closed. I suspect some funny business done in the back alley as Starbucks opened across the street soon after. When the city cut down those beautiful trees in front of the store and removed the planter boxes around them to push out the "undesirables" from the street from there, I knew something was up.

Awesome post JT. The people who live here love downtown and what makes the city thrive are the family events.
It has occurred to me that the current council members (excluding Scott Johnson) all have used their positions for personal gain. What are they actually doing for the taxpayers. VOTE THEM OUT.

Thank you for for the video -- so glad that it wasn't filmed by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce's favorite Lip Dup - Modern Mix Marketing...everyone would have been seasick within a minute of watching.....

The Council, especially the planning department and the individual boards have done a great job in the last five years providing the environment for the risk takers to survivie. Many city entities including the Chambers, Visitor's bureau, DBA, and the too many to name have all contributed to the growth and future to the city. People need to remember it's the private sector that drives the economy and pays the bills even in the so called toxic environment.

I don't know why anyone would dine in Saratoga ,the prices are too high and the food SUCKS...And the chance of some sickness with dirty Mexicans cooking it,just make want to kiss Marilynn Rivers....and hug Geri Loya....at least I would be stoned....

Madeline's closed because New Country Development, the owner of the building, wanted to get rid of those skateboarders with pink and green hair that congregated out front. That was back in 1999. To this day, I still won't give New Country any of my business.

And the kids with pink hair are adults now. I wonder what happened to them. . .

The only good thing about the Chamber's video was the use of Train for the music.
Otherwise it was a train wreck of massive proportions.

This is truly a quality video. 6:28 is right. The lip Dup was not very good. Modern Mix Marketing is overpriced and overhyped. They were paid somewhere in the range of $20,000 for that Lip Dup when others were willing to do it for $5000. Funny how politics plays a part in local business too.

Typical of some people who have the pleasure of living in Saratoga. Complain and be negative. Some of the commentors must be firends of the obstructionist council who are acting like children who didn't get what they wanted for Christmas. You always have an option. Don't eat here. Don't shop here. MOVE Negatism has no room is Saratoga Springs.

The hot pink hair grew out, some of the kids went to college and most of them are working.
Some of Saratoga's landlords are a big problem when it comes to paying rent for a one of a kind business.

JT,the rag has printed the names of the Mayors'Comp.Plan Committee,I think DOA Madigan,Franck and white Fang might want to start thinking about going Full Steam ahead with the Mayor and shelf this partisan negative representation, these three are anti commerce(including yepsen).

Hey 7:30....There is life north of Saratoga.
Try Glens Falls. Aimies Dinner and a Movie is a great value. Watch a first rate flick and have dinner just like the ole Broadway Theatre Grill (Broadway Joe's). They are at the heart of GF at the circle on Glen Street (Route 9). Call for reservations. We saw Argo last week. Excellent. Very reasonable, too. Chicken Caesar Salad is the best. Across from Aimies is Davidson's Brewery. They have a New York Steak dinner that will know your socks off! The beer and ale is top shelf, too! Want Mexican? Try Raul's on the corner right at the circle, smaller but cleaner (ha-ha-ha). Coffee Planet of Ballston Spa just opened up a new café on Glen next to Glen Street Bistro (very French, top shelf). The Wine Shop next to The Charles Wood Theatre is a real treasure and while you're there, you might want to catch a live performance. All within walking distance. Oh, I almost forgot: Rock Hill Café with the bread that made Mrs. London's famous is behind Davidson's on Exchange Street. Yes, there is life just down the road. All independently owned, (not big chain corporate) businesses. And it's not so snooty (lol).

JT What's your take on the Plan Review Committee chosen by the Mayor?

Ben lives on said...

some of the names I like some of them I don't but I understand why they are mI don't trust the dems in there current state to pick anyone.
John Franck is a crook
Madagan listens to the wrong people.
Toothy? Can you say Lew Benton and Amy Durland.
Thiswon't be settled till after November

Progressives become regressives. To block a major program in planning for the future of the City for no documented reason that be legitimately found other than three poor perspectives is call obstructionism. I AM AN OBSTRUCTOR SHOULD BE ON ALL THEIR CANPAIGN SIGNS. Republicans and Democrats alike should not think very highly of this group of people who remind me of a Little team with 14 players and they want to play every inning instead of going by the rules and share with their team mates. Power Power Power - I I I I - Me Me Me. What is written although somewhat vague in the Charter or any State Law does not state anywhere the Council has the right to appoint. It does state the product will be brought to the council for review and approval/disapprovaled by the Council. I am pararphrasing this because that is many people's interpretation. The same issue could occur with a Charter Change resolution.Think some of the Council needs a paciphier!!!

John - You state this won't be settled until November. If the Republican Party/Committee waits for elections to settle these issues and especially support their Mayor it would be disgraceful. The Democratic regressives have ounded and punded this Mayor yet no one from the Republican Committee of the few if any who attend Council Meetings does not speak out to support this Mayor they will lose support on some major constiuents that make up the support for the Republican Candidates. They have little or no money. They have reflected little or no support for wither of their current Council members. As a proud Republican and I feel very frustrated with this lack of support. If the Committee cannot come to a consensus on anything than they should be disbanded and and a new group with new leadership should take their place. If the Republicans do not win in November 2013 a majority of the Council it will be several years for that situation to occur again. In the meantime the progressive(regressive) body of the Council will continue on a path of destructive liberalism similar to the State and federal Government. At this point I am not sure there is a republican party. Even their County Chairman who was so positive they would win in 2011 the Committee did almost nothing to support their candidates states they cannot win the next election. I think it's time for the people to take back their party!!
